What are Age and Ability Friendly Cities?

Age-friendly cities are communities that allow residents to thrive in every stage in life. The eight domains of livability were created by the World Health Organization (WHO) and AARP. They are quality of life metrics that enable people of all ages and abilities to live healthy and connected lives within their communities. The World Health Organization (WHO) established the age-friendly movement to address the rapidly increasing older adult population across the world. The WHO developed 8 domains of livability standards as a framework to guide communities in adapting to these changes. These domains are:

  1. Outdoor Spaces and Buildings
  2. Respect and Social Inclusion
  3. Transportation
  4. Work and Civic Engagement
  5. Housing
  6. Communication and Information
  7. Social Participation
  8. Community and Health Services

The City of La Puente received a Local Aging and Disability Action Planning (LADAP) Grant award from the California Department of Aging to plan and develop a community-wide age- and disability-friendly action plan to make La Puente an age and ability friendly city.
What is a Local Aging and Disability Action Plan (LADAP) Program?

Our LADAP program will engage local aging and disability communities to seek their input in identifying La Puente’s age- and disability-friendly assets and areas of growth to improve our City’s livability along the Eight Domains of Livability from the World Health Organization (WHO) and AARP and the State of California’s Master Plan for Aging and the Five Goals for healthy communities for all ages and abilities.

The State of California Local Aging and Disability Action Planning Program

A Local Aging and Disability Action Plan (LADAP) is a program of strategies and actions that aims to improve services for older adults, people with disabilities, caregivers, and their families by expanding culturally important and accessible services. La Puente’s LADAP is funded by a grant award from the California Department of Aging that aims to:

  • Improve services & resources for older adults, people with disabilities, caregivers, & families
  • Support community members who are aging and/or living with a disability
  • Address health and other inequities within the aging and disabled communities
  • Combat racism, ageism, ableism, and biases with aging and disability services
The California Master Plan for Aging and the Five Bold Goals for Healthy Californians

The Master Plan for Aging (MPA) is a statewide initiative that encourages state government, local government, the private sector, and philanthropy to work together to improve equitable resources and actions that support and engage aging and disability communities. The Master Plan for Aging outlines Five Bold Goals to build a California for all ages and abilities:

  • Housing for all Ages and Stages: Millions of New Housing Options to Age Well
  • Health Reimagined: Close the Equity Gap in and Increase Life Expectancy
  • Inclusion and Equity, not Isolation: Keep Increasing Life Satisfaction as We Age
  • Caregiving that Works: One Million High-Quality Caregiving Jobs
  • Affording Aging: Close the Equity Gap in and Increase Elder Economic Sufficiency

The City of La Puente will use the eight domains of livability and these five bold goals to structure the evaluation and planning of aging and disability resources and services.

  • Provide expert insights to expand and improve existing senior and disability programs.
  • Brainstorm new services aimed to enhance the well-being of our aging and disabled communities.
  • Share resources that can inform our initiative and action plan document.
  • Advise ways to engage and recruit the local La Puente community for listening sessions & surveys.
